The disk jockey – selector, crate digger, musical host, turntablist. This seminar looks at the evolution of music, technologies, and practices of the modern discotheque. Join us every Thursday afternoon for hip-shaking vibes and music in the Lewis Music Library!
Each session will start with an informal talk and discussion on developments in DJ craft and tools over 5 decades, followed by a listening session of a music genre that fueled those changes, inspired creativity, and reimagined the dance floor.
You are welcome to join us for any part of the seminar. Dancing is recommended but not required. Tracklists will be posted publicly at the end of the month.
About the speaker: Philip Tan is a research scientist in CMS/W who started the MIT Dance Mix Coalition in 1998. He organizes Local Beats, a quarterly all-ages inclusive community party, and brings a balearic blend of garage house, disco, electro, trance, and dub to parties around Cambridge and Somerville.
