We’re pleased to announce a new special subject offering! For the upcoming Spring 2021 semester, Visiting Professor Eric Gordon is teaching “The Politics of Care and Empathy”. The 12-unit course is open to both undergraduates and graduate students:
What does it mean to care about and for others? Is empathy, or the ability to “feel with” another, possible or even desirable? This class explores the philosophy and history of care, its articulation as a feminized practice, and its relative marginalization in professional discourse. From phenomenology to radical feminism, the course will explore the values of a care ethic, and examine how contemporary practices, from activism, media making, mutual aid, and healthcare, are reimagining the role of care in modern society.
