Professor Edward Schiappa discusses media representation with the podcast “When We Disagree”

“What does it mean for a group of people to be ‘positively,’ ‘negatively,’ ‘accurately,’ or ‘inaccurately’ represented in media?”

Ed Schiappa, a long-time scholar of rhetoric and representation, is perhaps best known for his influential work developing the parasocial contact hypothesis, which showed that positive media representation of marginalized communities can lead to a decrease in prejudice against them. Schiappa and host Michael Lee dig into that work, coming as it does at a moment when people are looking for answers to the question of how to rediscover common ground with their fellow citizens.
