Associate (tenured) or Full Professor: MIT’s Comparative Media Studies/Writing section invites applications for an appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. An appointment as a Visiting Professor for the 2025-2026 academic year is possible. This position is part of a cohort hire with a concurrent search for two assistant professors.
Position Description: We seek scholars who work at the intersection of media and MIT’s traditional strengths in science and technology, with a focus on their combined role in transforming society. Possible areas of specialization include climate and environmental justice; disinformation and media manipulation; and pluralism and democracy. CMS/W welcomes a diverse set of approaches including but not limited to: data literacy and storytelling, computing and social inequity, documentary practice, infrastructure and resource extraction, and global/transnational perspectives.
Responsibilities: Faculty duties include teaching at the undergraduate level (with the possibility of graduate level teaching in the future), conducting research, and providing service at the Institute, School, and Unit level. Candidates should be capable of teaching in our core media studies curricula. We encourage applicants with an interest in building graduate programs and mentoring emerging scholars.
Required Qualifications: Tenured appointment in your current institution. Substantial publication record warranting a tenured appointment as Associate or Full Professor at MIT. In addition to scholars with a background in media studies, we welcome applicants from STS, anthropology, sociology, history, computational social science, area studies, digital humanities, and related fields. Applications from scholars with advanced degrees in science, engineering, or other technical fields are also invited to apply, so long as the social dimensions of science and technology are core to their work.
Preferred Qualifications: Leadership experience and interest or experience in building programs. Experience teaching and advising graduate students. We encourage applicants whose portfolio includes public-facing work.
Applications must include a cover letter including a description of research plans and teaching interests, curriculum vitae, up to three relevant publications or a portfolio, and three references (of whom letters may be requested at a later stage). Applications must be made online at Interfolio.com (due by November 1). Questions may be addressed to Search Committee Chair Prof. Paul Roquet at proquet@mit.edu.
